Title: Views
Medium: wood, cardboard, paper
April 2107
Exhibition Text: "views" is a project that was designed to model a structure that could embrace the lake. In my project I chose Marijke de Goey as my inspirational artist because of her ability to create portals without the use of walls or doors.
Artistic Inspiration
For my Room with View project, I chose Marijke de Goey as my artistic inspiration. As a visual artist, she works with illusory, lines and curves that are meant to reveal space. The space she creates with her sculptures, opens up to the emotional concepts of feeling big or small. This is similar to what I wanted to accomplish with my project. I wanted to pay my closest attention to my use of space, portals, and paths. The sculptures shown below, of Marijke de Goey's work portray an appropriate example for structure that uses the components of space, portals, and path without the use of any walls or doors.
Experimentation
To start this project's process, I began by playing around with different settings with the walls of my structure. I rearranged the paper that was used for the draft of the wall, to create three planning ideas that I thought would be best to pursue. After peer reviews and critiques, I was able to manipulate my structure once again for my final outcome. Once the final idea was in my head, I hand sketched it so I could begin my process.
Process
1. Gathering ideas
I began my process by first finding some inspiration and ideas.
2. Finding the meaning
After brainstorming my final sketch, I had to research possible meanings behind candles and bridges. I was able to put together the two to come up with the theme of---- . I planned on creating a piece that would portray the importance of ----,
3. Transferring my ideas
Once I had a solid plan with a meaning attached, I re-sketched what I wanted my final piece to look like. I did this in order for it to be made clear as to what steps I would have to follow.
4. Gathering Materials
When I finished with the layout of my piece, I began to gather the resources and materials necessary to make my work. This included cardboard, wood and paper.

5. Cutting Out the Sand
Once I had all materials, I began to continue by first cutting the cardboard for the layout of the sand. I cut them into three layers with my blade, giving it a clean cut with smooth edges. I then layers each cut out cardboard and glued them together, onto the black cardboard that I used to represent water.

6. Cutting Out the Walls
The scale for this project was 1/8 in = 1ft. When I was done putting together the lake and sand of my piece, I took the wood and cut out walls that were approximately 3/4 in, to represent 6 ft. I wanted my walls to decrease in height as you walked and approached the lake, so I made sure to cut them out accordingly.

7. Putting Pieces Together
Once the sand was glued down to the water, I placed the walls into the cardboard sand by creating little slits that allowed the wood to slide through and stay standing. To make it look more to scale, I added a few small rocks and a tree to better represent what a model of the lake structure would actually look like.

Reflection
When finished with this project, I found it to be a success. All my pieces had been cleanly cut and placed, with no sight of any glue or fringes.
ACT Questions
1.Clearly explain how you are able to identify the cause-effect relationships between your inspiration and its effect upon your artwork.
My inspiration was Marijke de Goey and in her work she uses sculpture and structure to create pathways and portals, which is similar to the wall structures I used to create portals.
2. What is the overall approach (point of view) the author (from your research) has regarding the topic of your inspiration?
My research focused mostly on the way a path could be created using sculptures.
3. What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, cultures, etc. while you researched your inspiration?
I discovered that the ironic criticism of our contemporary society can greatly influence the techniques and the ideas that comes forth and is created.
4. What was the central idea or theme around your inspirational research?
Through my piece, I explored the central ideas of relief and embracement.
5) What kind of inferences (conclusions reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning) did you make while reading your research?
An inference that I made during my research was the "room" doesn't have to mean having an actual wall and door. .

Critique Questions
1. How does your work create a relationship between land and water?
my work has build a relationship between land and water with the use of it's path. The path created by my structure has brought together the land and water, so that one no longer feels a disconnect between sand and beach. Together you are brought into one big picture.
2. What feelings will people have upon seeing, entering, walking through your structure?
When entering and walking through my structure, I plan for people to feel the emotional concepts of feeling small. I want people to feel more enclosed than open. This will then create a bigger impact and portal for when coming face to face with the lake. Allowing for people to feel a sense of relief, like catching one's breath.
3. How does your structure relate to our world physically as well as with our mind?
In relation to our world, I wanted to almost create a reminder, that we are still these mere physical human beings in such a big world of technological advancements. As for our minds, my structure stands for the way people feel enclosed, but have some sense of relief.
4. How does your structure embrace the lake?
The path created by the walls were position in a way that starts off closed in, leading you into a wide space, so that when approaching the lake you can feel the vast body of water experience. It is almost like an arm with an extending open hand, opening it's palm to the greatness of the lake.
5. How does it use fundamental architectural components of
- path: my structure includes walls, that were set on the sand to create a path that would guide one to the shore of the beach
-portal: I was able to create portals with my structure by setting up walls, serving as an invitation to enter up to lake
-space: in order to create a good feeling of embrace by the lake, I made sure to use the space upon the land appropriately so that there would be a feelings of being overwhelmed, that way when getting to the lake, one feels relief. This was done with the use of my walls and ground plane.
6. How does your structure embody meaning?
When creating the structure for this project, I wanted to get personal with it's significance. I have always felt as if I was overwhelmed with burdens and overly high expectation. That is why I created a cramped space for the beginning of the path. The end of the path that meets the lake is what I envision as a goal for myself. The feeling of relief and content.
7. Describe at least three meaningful decisions
- deciding on a final idea for my project, this would create the final set up for the overall structure. It was crucial for me to settle on an idea that I knew would perfectly embody my overall ideas and feelings
- use of space, the component of space was most important to me, so when deciding on the layout of the structure I thought it through with more caution
- deciding on how i would embrace the lake, the embracing of the lake was for me like the final ending of a story. It had to be worth the build up.
