Exhibition Text: For this tryptic art piece, I was challenged with creating a panel of paintings that would portray the way I see myself, how I affect my city, and how my city affects me. For my artistic inspiration, I chose to use the pop art movement to communicate a societal issue and it's impact on me.
Artistic Inspiration
For my tryptic piece, I was inspired by the pop art movement. This visual art movement was greatly coincided with the youth culture, which is why I was inspired by it. What attracted me most were the graphic like chat bubbles that artist would include in there pieces. I thought this would help me better communicate my central ideas more straightforward.
Experimentation
Before beginning with the actual process of my work, I started with a few sketches of what I thought could portray the wrongful impact and depiction of rape in my society.. Once I had sketched my final ideas, I began to convert them onto my three canvases.
Process
1. Gathering ideas
I began my process by first finding some inspiration and ideas. As I was searching through the internet, what grabbed my attention most was the pop art era. Since we were to create a story throughout our tryptic boards, I thought that a pop art piece seemed best fitted because of it's graphic phrases and strong hues.
2. Finding the meaning
After brainstorming my final sketch. I planned on creating a piece that would portray the sexualizing of women and how it has impacted me.
3. Transferring my ideas
Once I had a solid plan with a meaning attached, I re-sketched what I wanted my final piece to look like. I did this in order for it to be made clear as to what steps I would have to follow.
4. Gathering Materials
When I finished with the layout of my piece, I began to gather the resources and materials necessary to make my work. This included acrylic paint, brushes, and three canvases.
5. Stretching the Canvases
To begin my project, I stretched 3 separate canvases, each being 2 ft by 1 ft.

6.Canvas 1: How I See Myself
My first canvas was made to portray how I see myself. One of the things I always tend to emphasize is that I have total control over my own body. I believe I am the only one entitled to decide who touches me, what I wear and what is placed on my body. I show this in my first canvas with a sketch representing my figure, being held by no one but myself.

7. Canvas 2: How I Affect my City
In my second canvas, I chose to show how I affect my city, As a young woman, I know what it feels like to be sexualized and made to think that I have nothing more to offer than just my body. I affect my city in a strong, powerful way by being a voice for women and using it to fight against those who take advantage of us and our bodies.

8. Canvas 3: How my City Affects Me
For my third canvas, I showed how my city affects me, Today's society thinks it's okay to blame acts such as rape and harassment on women and what they wear. This affects me because I feel like I can no longer dress and look as I please without walking out the door knowing there's a fearful chance I could be harassed. Women are told to dress better and more appropriately to prevent males from attraction, when males should be the one's being taught not to touch a women without there consent.

Reflection
After finishing this art piece, I was most content with the central ideas being shown. I feel as though I greatly communicated the affects of my city and myself, as well as who I am. Throughout this entire process, I know I could have improved greatly on my time management skills. If I had done so, I could have completed this piece in a more timely manner, resulting in a cleaner, stronger piece. With my time managed better, I could have better planned how I was to paint the backgrounds of my paintings. This was the section in which I struggled most with throughout this whole process. If this had been better executed, the rest of my painting process could have gone at a much smoother pace.
